چکیده

We present an analytic model describing the ““ cluster wind ÏÏ Ñow that results from the multiple interaction of the stellar winds produced by the stars of a dense cluster of massive stars. The analytic solution (obtained by matching an inner and an outer solution at the radius of the stellar cluster) can have asymptotically subsonic or supersonic behavior, the latter possibility being appropriate for the case of a cluster surrounded by a low-pressure environment. We also present a three-dimensional numerical simulation of such a cluster wind. We Ðnd that the behavior of the mean Ñow computed from the numerical simulation quite closely follows the Ñow properties deduced from the analytic model. Finally, we discuss the observational properties of the cluster wind produced by dense clusters such as the ““ Arches ÏÏ cluster close to the center of our Galaxy. In particular, we predict that the X-ray emission from the intracluster gas in this stellar cluster could be detectable. Subject headings : hydrodynamics È shock waves È stars : winds, outÑows

The Diffuse Light in Simulations of Galaxy Clusters

We study the properties of the diffuse light in galaxy clusters forming in a large hydrodynamical cosmological simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology. The simulation includes a model for radiative cooling, star formation in dense cold gas, and feedback by SN-II explosions. We select clusters having mass M > 10hM⊙ and study the spatial distribution of their star particles. While most stellar light is ...

Absorption Line Survey of H3 toward the Galactic Center Sources Ii. Eight Infrared Sources within 30 Pc of the Galactic Center

Infrared absorption lines of H3 , including the metastable R(3,3) l line, have been observed toward eight bright infrared sources associated with hot and massive stars located in and between the Galactic Center Cluster and the Quintuplet Cluster 30 pc to the east. The absorption lines with high velocity dispersion arise in the Galaxy’s Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) as well as in foreground spira...

Core dissolution and the dynamics of massive stars in young stellar clusters

We investigate the dynamical effects of rapid gas expulsion from the core of a young stellar cluster. The aims of this study are to determine 1) whether a mass-segregated core survives the gas expulsion and 2) the probable location of any massive stars that have escaped from the core. Feedback from massive stars is expected to remove the gas from the core of the cluster first, as that is where ...

On the origin of the galaxy luminosity function

Evidence is summarized which suggests that when a protogalaxy collapses, a fraction f of its gas fails to heat to the virial temperature, where f is large for haloes less massive than the value M∗ associated with L∗ galaxies. Stars and galaxies form only from the cool gas fraction. Hot gas is ejected from low-mass systems as in conventional semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. In high-mass...
